Oromo is a language of the Cushitic family, a branch of the Afroasiatic language family that also includes the Semitic, Berber, and Ancient Egyptian languages. Though it has a long history and many speakers Oromo has a history of struggling for representation. Oromo is now written in Roman script, though it has previously been written in Arabic, Ethiopian Ge'ez, and even a unique script called Sapalo. Oromo has 5 vowels of a very typical set for African languages, which contrast length as do consonants.
